Alcee Fortier Alma Mater
This original of the Fortier High School Alma Mater, in the hand of the composer, Leonard Denena, was found among his mementos. As his godchild, I am proud to have scrapbooks and documents from his musical career. This document is prepared to honor the musical heritage of Fortier and its Alumni. Best regards from Rocky Troxler.
Leonard Denena was director of the Warren Easton Annex Band in 1929, an expansion that became Fortier High School in 1931. He was the first director of the award-winning Fortier High School Band from Feb. 1931 to 1938 and the New Orleans Police Band from 1947 to 1970. He was the first president of the LMEA (1936-1937). Denena was in the US Navy 1917-1921, and later served as a Captain and then Major in the Marine Corps Reserves. He directed the 10th Battalion Band, US Marine Corps, Reserve, based in New Orleans. He was highly regarded as a music educator and director.
